Looks like someone hit the bars (among other things) a little too early…

So, I just went to Walmart to buy some stuff, and on the way back I was fortunate enough to witness this. You can’t quite tell from the shitty camera phone picture, but some poor soul somehow managed to drive a good 10 feet off the road and into the gas station sign.

That takes skill, folks.

When asked for our all-decade team during the summer, we wrote the following about the Detroit Red Wings defenseman:

“When you’ve won so many Norris Trophies than you can play a game of Jenga with them, I’d say that warrants inclusion on this list.”

Lidstrom’s six Norris Trophies for best defenseman aren’t an NHL record: Doug Harvey has seven and Bobby Orr has eight. But those players competed in a slightly smaller League, and Lidstrom’s remained king of the mountain despite challenges from some stellar, Hall of Fame-potential defenseman, two of whom are on this list.

Simply put, he was the total package. An offensive player who tallied 574 points, his four best point-scoring seasons all coming in the 2000s. A defensive player who was a plus-232 for the decade, frequently logging more than 28 minutes a night for the Wings. A leader who won the Conn Smythe for the Wings’ 2001-02 Stanley Cup champions, and who then captained a second Detroit team to the Cup in 2007-08. And he made it look frequently effortless.

We previously broke down the Lidstrom/Brodeur dynamic when The Sporting News named the defenseman as its player of the decade, a decision we obviously endorse. Looking back at our ranking here, what we said then still stands in the final analysis:

The best two players of the last 10 years were a defenseman and a goaltender, and that speaks volumes about which positions are underappreciated in the NHL, as well as the marketing challenges the League’s faced in selling guys who keep pucks out of, rather than put them into, the net.

Brodeur and Lidstrom never received the marketing push of a Crosby or an Ovechkin; they’ll have to just settle on being legendary performers at their given positions in the NHL.

So, as I repeatedly mentioned over the last few weeks, I went to San Diego for the past couple days. My friend Nick moved out there, and my other friend Nick drove with him, because who the hell wants to drive from Michigan to California by themselves? But I have to say, I was a little disappointed.

We went to this bar called Effins, some Irish pub, and that was pretty cool. We attempted to play trivia, and failed miserably. There were six categories I think, and the one we did the best in was “literature.” Really? Literature? Out of the other categories being Common Sense and Sports and Thanksgiving and who knows what else…we dominated Literature. Wow. Memorable moment of trivia? Question was “How many months have 28 days?” Us being the oh so intelligent ones said “one.”

Apparently only one month has 28 days. Stupid Michiganders.

Anyways, after trivia was done, we had finished maybe three pitchers, and the Nicks were ready to call it a night. I suppose they were tired because you know they DID just drive a good 2200 miles or so clear across the country, BUT STILL. What happened to staying out all night and closing the bars and making complete assholes out of ourselves?

That wasn’t really a big deal I guess, but seeing as how the next day we didn’t really do shit except go get food and drive around and explore downtown for a bit, I was a little shocked. Admittedly, Nick #2 did have an early flight this morning, so there’s that. And I suppose I shouldn’t bitch, seeing as how I can still go to San Diego and be stupid with Nick #1 basically whenever I want, so yeah.

This little excursion did make me realize how much I do miss my Michigan people, though. What with just sitting and chilling and shooting the shit and whatnot. Oh, memories.

Anyways, that’s my story.

And remember kids, there is only ONE month with 28 days.

The Winter Classic is one of the best ideas the NHL has ever had. I’m so unbelievably sad I can’t go to Boston to see the Flyers play in this year’s game. Maybe in the future, there will be a Flyers vs. Penguins game somewhere in Pennsylvania.
